How it plays

Six terms to know before your first puzzle.

HIGHLIGHT
Drag across a term to mark it, or tap its first letter and then its last. Your line snaps to the nearest of eight directions.
DEFINITION
Shows up the moment you find a term. Tap any term you’ve found to read it again.
HINT
Rings the first letter of the next term on your list. Hints never add time.
CLEAN RUN
Finishing a puzzle with zero hints. Your best time on every puzzle is saved too.
NEW LAYOUT
The same terms in fresh positions, so you learn the words and not the grid.
SELF-CHECK
The review when you finish. Say each definition out loud, then tap to check yourself.

Four levels. No grade levels.

Every subject plays at every difficulty. Each level adds grid, terms and directions, and Expert takes the terms off the list.

Easy

  • 10 × 10 grid
  • 8 terms
  • Across, down, diagonal

A good first pass through new terms.

Medium

  • 12 × 12 grid
  • 10 terms
  • Adds backwards and up-diagonal

Terms start running right to left.

Hard

  • 14 × 14 grid
  • 12 terms
  • All 8 directions

Half the filler letters come from the terms, so the grid is full of near misses.

Expert

Clue: an object’s resistance to a change in its motion

  • 16 × 16 grid
  • 14 terms
  • Clue mode: definitions only

You get the definition. Recall the term, then find it.

Expert hides the terms.

In clue mode, the list shows each definition and how many letters the term has. You have to recall the word before you can look for it, which is much closer to what a test asks of you.

Clue mode works on puzzles you make, too, at any level.

31 subjects, from Cell Biology to Calculus.

Each puzzle has 14 terms, every one with a plain-language definition. Eight subjects are free at every level. Full Access adds the other 23.

  • Upload a .txt, .csv or .tsv file with one term per line and the definition after a tab, comma or dash.
  • Your puzzles are saved on your device, ready to replay with a new layout.
  • The puzzle maker comes with Full Access.

Questions

Which devices does it work on?

WordSprouts Scholar is coming to iPhone and iPad. On iPad it plays in landscape, with the grid and the term list side by side. On iPhone it plays in portrait.

Do I need an account or an internet connection?

No account, ever. Every puzzle works offline. The app connects to the App Store only when you buy or restore Full Access.

How do I get Full Access back on a new device?

Sign in with the Apple Account you bought it with, then open Settings in the app and tap Restore purchase. The button is also on the Full Access screen.

What kind of file can I upload?

A .txt, .csv or .tsv file up to 200 KB. Put one term per line, with its definition after a tab, a comma or a dash. Most flashcard apps can export a list in one of these formats. Each term needs 3 to 16 letters, and a puzzle holds up to 20 terms.

Does my progress sync between devices?

No. Because there are no accounts, your progress and the puzzles you make stay on the device where you made them.

Is it for younger kids?
